We just (about 4 week ago..) got back from a week vacationing in Breckenridge. It was the girls first vacation and we were definitely ready for some time away. Our last getaway was to Breckenridge two years ago shortly after we got married and before the girls were here.
We had a great time and were so excited to share our love of the mountains with Eden and Olivia!
The girls were excellent travelers. They hardly cried at all and slept most of the drive. We only had to make a couple of stops along the way and somehow made better time with them than we usually do without them.
On Monday, we did a Jeep tour with a survivalist named Wolfgang Ubermacher. He was the real deal. He took us through the mountains and educated us on how to live solely off the land. He showed us how Alpine Sunflowers are always facing east, a great thing to know if you ever get lost in the mountains. He told us how to make flour out of wheat grass and showed us how to use sage for several important purposes. We saw a large herd of sheep while we were with The Wolf (what his friends call him). That was pretty neat.
The next day Jared, Brandon, Tony, and I hiked Mount Sherman, one of the Colorado 14ers, that reaches 14,036 ft. This was Jared and my second 14er to summit and it was a really cool one. There were several mining ruins on the hike up. We also saw three moose before starting the hike. One was a beast! He walked right in front of us. We saw some beaver, too. I was a little bit hesitant to do this hike, having had twins only 11 months ago. The oxygen was thin and there was quite a bit of loose rock to maneuver around, but we made it to the summit! Reaching the top is always exhilarating!
Thursday we decided to take the girls out with us on a hike. We wore them on our backs and they loved it. We hiked to a lake and took the girls out of the packs for some pictures and rock skipping. They weren’t very good at skipping rocks, but they liked watching their cousins try.
We went downtown quite a bit with the family and frequented our favorite shops and restaurants. After visiting Breck so many times, we have our usual spots that we’ve made a tradition out of visiting each year.
As usual, we were sad to leave the mountains but we had a great time. We are already looking forward to our Breckenridge trip of 2015!
